Glossary of Terms

Here are some terms that may help you understand TFF a bit better. Keep in mind that our perspectives on fundamentalist faith come from a decidedly Christian background, though we’d love to hear from former fundamentalists of other faiths, and our definitions (as our world views) are always evolving.

  1. The Former Fundie (TFF) - Think of us as your John the Baptist. Your very own bat-shit-crazy, insect-eating prophet. Our message? Don’t be afraid to ask questions - lots of them - about everything. The only one who can save you from fundamentalism is YOU. So man-up, Messiah! And let us hold your head under water for a sec.
  2. Former Fundies - A.k.a. Formers. At one point or another we were believers. Wholehearted, fully devoted, drink-the-Kool-Aid believers. We each consciously, purposefully walked away from fundamentalism without the assistance of demonic forces.
  3. Fundamentalists - A.k.a. Fundies. Wholehearted, fully devoted, drink-the-Kool-Aid believers in a fundamentalist faith.
  4. Fundamentalism - Any belief system that claims to own the whole, complete, literal truth of G-d as defined and interpreted by a specific group of people.
  5. Normals - Everybody else. These people may subscribe to any religion or none. The clear difference lay in their connection to reality. If they have faith, it is lived out in the context of modern life. That’s not to say that anyone is exclusively normal, we just chose the term normals because it’s slamron backwards.
  6. Your Mom - Not a virgin. Everybody knows it.
